September 7, 1903

This is the third letter John writes to Nursie. At the end the abbreviation S.W.A.K. means "sealed with a kiss". John writes on the family store's letterhead (Ashmore Brothers General Merchandise) and apologizes for not using stationery. [Sorry the last scan clips the bottom of the page a bit. JNyF]

My Dear Nursie:
              It is useless for me
to tell you  that I was dis-appointed yesterday,
for you know I was when I had wanted the days
until Sunday should come so that I might be
with you my darling, and then not get to see you at
all. It was one of the bitterest dis-appointments I
ever had, but I have heard all about it and of
course I dont blame you sweetheart for it no
fault of yours I am sure. Of course Nursie you
did not want to be with me so bad - not like I
did you for that is not possible - may be you
didnt care no-way, but Heavens knows I wanted to
be with you. Nursie sometimes I wish that I
did not love you so, for I cant help but feel that
you dont love me, but I cant keep from loving you.
I love you better to-day than ever and will always
love you. I would ask nothing better than to be
with you. | I went to Hilliardville Saturday and played
ball, but my side got beat. I played a good game
and I wish you could have heard the girls cheering my
playing. I played first base and a crowd of girls -

sat in a shade near me and the certainly
did "yell" faithfully for us. I wish you had
been there, then I would have enjoyed the game.
I had a very nice time until I got home and found
you were not here, then my good times vanished.
I would have come right back but Mr. Lloyd, the
man that wants me to work for him, wouldnt
let me come back. He is certainly anxious for
me to go to Lloyd and work for him, and I may
go as he made me a good offer. He wants
me to start the first of October and I have got to
let him know this week whether I go or not. I would
go in a minute Nursie if it wasnt  for leaving you
and Mama. You need not think that I shall ever
forget my little girl it matters not where I go, but
if I leave I wont get to see you any, and I want
to see you now so bad.  I would be glad
to come out there next Sunday - the second - if I could
be with you sweetheart, but I have so much to do until
I am not sure whether I can off or not, but Nursie
dont have a date for Sunday afternoon please for I [smudge]
want to come there even if I cant come to church, but if

you have a date it wont be any use for me to
come. It would only  make me mad to see you
with some other boy. Perhaps you thought strange
of me the other day at the school house for not coming
around, but Nursie I'll tell you the reason. Joe
told me that you[underlined] would not be there, and I was
not expecting you and I was so dirty until I
was ashamed. I had been working tram [?] road
that day. I did not see you when you came up or
I should certainly have spoken. Believe me, I didnt
know you  had come until Joe told me. I was playing
ball then and thought I would come back by the
house when I left, but Arthur hurt my thumb so
bad I like to have cried. I had gotten it knocked
out of joint nearly before and he hurt it worse.
I could hardly wait before until I was of sight be-
fore I read you sweet letter. Well sweetheart I
am trying to write in the store and the people bother
me so I cant write. Please excuse paper and writing.
I shall look for a long letter soon nfrom my little girl.
                             As ever yours, Jno.H.A.

[bracketed at bottom]
If I were to leave I must see you before I go, and think
I will be out Sunday. I may come to school house one
day this week as I have work near by. If I dont shall cer-
tainly talk a little with you. S.W.A.K. Please dont show this.  J

[margin, in pencil]
Excuse paper my
other is at house
Hope to see you.
I will get your
letter this week.
Dont show this
but tear it up.
